Oregano

Another antioxidant powerhouse loaded with phenols. Rosmarinic acid has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against food-borne pathogens, and can be used topically as an herbal antiseptic.

The herb is used to treat respiratory tract disorders, gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, menstrual cramps, and urinary tract disorders.It contains the compound carvacrol which was found to reduce heart rate, mean arterial pressure as well as the systolic and diastolic blood pressures.

The herb is also applied topically to help treat a number of skin conditions, such as acne and dandruff.

Dried oregano and especially essential oil of oregano are extremely volatile and anti-parasitic. Use two to three drops of oregano oil in water with fresh squeezed lemon and drink this three times a day.

Fennel

Contains flavonoids and tannins. Stimulates bile acid production in the liver, giving it a major role in fat digestion and absorption. Also contains anethole, shown to reduce inflammation and retard cancer.

Cloves

Cloves are among the top three spices in antioxidant concentration.

Clove contains significant amounts of an active component called eugenol, which has made it the subject of numerous health studies, including studies on the prevention of toxicity from environmental pollutants like carbon tetrachloride, digestive tract cancers, and joint inflammation.

Cloves are also used for tooth pain.

 

Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a member of the mint family.  Considered a calming herb, it has been used as far back as the Middle Ages to reduce stress and anxiety, promote sleep, improve appetite, and ease pain and discomfort from indigestion.  Even before the Middle Ages, lemon balm was steeped in wine to lift the spirits, help heal wounds, and treat venomous insect bites and stings.

It appears to have antibacterial and antiviral properties against Listeria and Staphylococcus auerus.

Helps improve cognitive function and decrease agitation in people with Alzheimer’s.

Used topically it helps heal cold sores, HSV

As with many other herbs in your healing garden, lemon balm promotes relaxation and a sense of calm.
